We couldn’t have picked a worse day, weatherwise, than Sat. Oct 4 for our Annual Fall Festival.  It was cold, rainy and windy!2014 Fall Festival0013

But cold, wind and rain can not stop campers from doing their thing.  We had an all-time record crowd and everyone I talked to seemed to be having a good time.

There was a line waiting at the door at 8:30 and the parking lot was overflowing onto the grass with cars till 5 o’clock in the afternoon.  Twenty-two dozen donuts lasted till

shortly after noon (apple-cinnamon ran out before the glazed pumpkin).  Hot cider was very popular.  The first seminar on, “Getting your RV Ready for Winter”, was well2014 Fall Festival00012014 Fall Festival0004

attended and Camp-Land’s Fred Dooley did his usual great job of explaining the importance of doing it right.

Many attendees stayed all forenoon and, joined by a steady flow of newcomers (and one very patient and well-behaved dog), were on hand for other seminars on electronic

devices, roof materials and maintenance.  The always-popular, “Ask a Tech” session generated a lot of good discussion.

Meanwhile, children were busy with their own supervised fun.  Getting their faces painted was the most popular activity.
The pigs had been roasting all forenoon and the lunch break was a lot of fun, in spite of the weather.  Mostly, we moved indoors, but some brave souls stayed outdoors underthe tent.

Indoors, the chairs were rearranged and tables moved in for eating.  The popular and very talented NW Indiana band, “Barking Moonbats” provided live music during lunch, and

after.  They included a lot of top songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that were a big hit with the audience.

The afternoon was busy looking through all the RVs on display and with test drives of Motorhomes and test towing of trailers.  Michigan City Dodge had a group of beautiful

Dodge trucks on display that were equipped for towing. A representative of Michigan City Dodge was present to answer questions about towing and the Winnebago Trend motorhome

that is built on the Dodge Ram chassis.

Most visitors stayed late into the afternoon, listening to the music or mostly looking at the interiors of RVs.  It was a chance to really relax inside a unit and imagine what

it would be like to spend weekends and vacations living in it.  Motorhomes and 5th wheels got a lot of attention.  Probably the single most-visited unit was the new Reflection

travel trailer just introduced by Grand Design RV.

All in all, it was the best-attended Fall Festival we have ever had.  It is our way of saying “Thank You” to the Chicagoland-NW Indiana camping community that has supported

Camp-Land for over 50 years.

JUNE 2014

We are in the midst of our month-long 53rd  Anniversary Sell-A Bration and want to invite you to come visit us.  We are proud to have been in this exciting business for 53 years —  now with 2nd  generation management.

There are a lot of great things going on right now in the RV world.  New products.  New features.  Fresh new floorplans.  Ways to make campers lighter weight.

# 1 SELLING JAYFLIGHT TRAVEL TRAILERS are now available with optional fiberglass exterior.  Jayflight has for years been the country’s most popular aluminum-skin line of travel trailers because of their practical floor plans and quality interiors and cabinetry.  Now you can get the same Jayflight with optional fiberglass in place of the aluminum skin.  Fiberglass looks sharp, is easier to keep clean and is hail resistant.  Hail resistance is especially desirable here in the Midwest where hail storms are common.

LIGHTWEIGHT TRAVEL TRAILERS – Expandable hybrid  travel trailers have been very popular for several years as one answer to the need for more room in a lightweight, easy-to-tow camper.  Jayco has been dominant in expandables and has come out with several new floorplans and lighter weight models.  We have a huge selection in stock, ready to go for your next camping trip.

Travel trailers with laminated fiberglass construction are lighter than conventional wood construction.  They have walls with an aluminum framework instead of wood.  The walls are a sandwich of fiberglass outer skin, a thin plywood underlayment, thick foam insulation center and the inner paneling.  Lighter weight and resistant to water, they usually cost more than conventional campers.

Apex travel trailers built by Coachmen have taken lightweight one step further.  They have a laminated fiberglass exterior and foam insulation but the layer between the outer fiberglass and the foam insulation is Azdel composite panels instead of plywood.  Azdel panels are thin rigid panels made from a synthetic material that is impervious to water, won’t rot or mold and is extremely light weight.  It cannot delaminate the way the plywood underlayment can when wet.  Costs a little more, but not as much as you might expect. For example, the Apex model 288BH has double over double bunkbeds, private walkaround queen bedroom and outdoor patio kitchen.  It weighs under 5000 lbs. and is selling for under $26,000 during our Anniversary Sale.

SMALL MOTORHOMES –  The pet-friendly Thor A.C.E. class A motorhomes were so popular that we ran out early last summer.  We stocked up this Spring and have more on the way, so we hope we won’t run out this year.  There are several floorplans from 27 to 31 feet, all featuring private bedrooms with walkaround queen beds (or king in one model).  They also have an electric drop-down queen bed over the front living area, which provides a second bed that can be left permanently made up, if you need it.

There are exciting developments in really small, fun-to-drive motorhomes.  Without the height and cabover of a conventional Class C, they are sleek and aerodynamic.  Winnebago’s diesel View has been around for a while.  Their model 24 G has a rear slide-out that makes possible a walk-around queen bed in the rear bedroom.  The new Four Winds Siesta 24 SR has a similar rear slide-out bedroom and is also on a Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis.

The big news this year is Winnebago’s sleek new Trend Motorhome built on the RAM ProMaster 6 cylinder, front-wheel drive, gasoline chassis.  All the people here at Camp Land that have taken it for a test drive came back with the same report: “It is a joy to drive!”  There are two floorplans, both of which have a queen size electric drop-down bed over the living area.  One model also has a permanent ground level bed in the rear.  If ease of driving is high on your priority list, you should look at the Winnebago Trend.

LARGER MOTORHOMES   Two 35 foot Winnebago models have emerged as leaders among the larger motorhomes.  The bath-and-a-half Vista 35F has created a bit of a sensation.  It has a great master bedroom suite with a large bathroom and another half bath in the living area.

The Sightseer 35G has 3 big slide-outs which allow room for a king size bed and a spectacular living room.  It comes with washer/dryer, LED lighting and all the quality extras you would expect in a Winnebago Sightseer.

GRAND DESIGN 5th WHEELS   The Grand Design family of 5th Wheels are the most exciting new RVs we have seen in many years.  The Grand Design Solitude is an extended stay 5th Wheel that comes in several models. The bedroom is amazing. The Grand Design Reflection is a luxury 5th Wheel that falls in a popular price range.  There are several models to choose from and they sell as fast as we can get them.  The Grand Design Momentum is a top-of-the-line toy hauler available in three different floorplans.  If you are in the market for a 5th Wheel, you must see the Grand Design products.

Come take advantage of special anniversary pricing thru June 30.  We have the best selection ever of 2014 and 2015 model RVs,  as well as a huge selection of recently traded in, pre-owned RVs.  We are open 4 evenings each week, for your convenience.  Please visit our website for more information.

There are lots of exciting new product developments for you to see during our Anniversary event.  One of the most exciting new things is Jayco’s new option of a fiberglass exterior on their industry leading Jayflight line of travel trailers.  Jayflight was already the # 1 best selling line of aluminum campers in the country, with their sharp interiors and cabinetry.   The optoion of replacing the aluminum skin with fiberglass isn’t terribly costly and you have all the hail resistance and easy cleaning of a laminated fiberglass exterior.  Laminated construction is lighter weight, but if weight isn’t a problem, these Jayflights with the fiberglass exterior are SHARP.

If weight is a serious consideration, a couple of real winners have come to the forefront this year.  Apex by Coachmen is a rising star.  Extremely lightweight because they are not only of laminated fiberglass construction but also use more costly Adzel Composite panels instead of wood paneling.  Surprisingly the overall cost of the Apex trailers is not much more than a conventionally built Apex 288 BHS

fiberglass camper.  Apex also has some innovative floorplans that are HOT.  They were one of the first to introduce double over double bunk beds which are comfortable for adults as well as children.  The Apex 288 BHS is a bunkhouse that weighs under 5,000 lbs. and has created quite a sensation.  It has double over double bunks, a slideout and private queen  bedroom.  The new fiberglass front end cap with LED lighting is a very classy touch.  The only down side is that we have a hard time getting them fast enough during the busy season.

Winnebago Minnie Travel Trailers are all under 5100 lbs. and their colorful exterior fiberglass is striking.  In fact, more colorful exteriors are a trend that is noticeable.  Most are not quite as bright as the Minnie, but grey and beige are becoming more common than plain white.  Winnebago  Ultralite 31 BHDS bunkhouse and the Coleman 297 RE are hot new  floorplans for families and couples respectively

SATURDAY APRIL 26 IS THE DAY — Camp-Land’s SPRING FESTIVAL & SEMINAR DAY is coming  Saturday April 26.  250  new and used RVs will be OPEN all day for browsing.  Manufacturer’s Representatives from several  of our RV manufacturers will be on hand to answer questions.

Camp Land Fall Festival Seminar

There was a line waiting when the doors opened at 8:30 on Sat. Oct 12.  By the time  the first seminar started at 9:00 am, nearly 100 people were roaming the lot looking at RVs.  A few dozen settled in for donuts and coffee and the first seminar on winterizing your RV.  Some folks attended nearly every seminar and others drifted in and out, catching a seminar here and there, roaming the lot in between.  It was very relaxed and everyone seemed to be having fun.  2013 Festival00072013 Festival0003

The pigs were roasting on the spit, and some of the kids were having fun learning a new craft.  The Seminars continued, with presentations on TV satellite systems for RVs, RV appliances and how to keep your RV from developing roof leaks.  There was a lot of friendly camping conversation around our campfire, which, like most campfires, smoked a little bit.

Background music was provided by, “Rick and Donny”, the popular NW Indiana accoustic guitar act.  Their rendition of Beetles favorites and other

Rick and Donny

popular songs was just right for the outdoors, campsite atmosphere.

The elevated rear patio of the Grand Design Momentum Toy Hauler 5th Wheel made a perfect stage for their performance.

Everyone enjoyed a fine lunch of roast pork, baked beans, potato salad and dessert.

Representatives of RV manufacturers were mingling and chatting with campers all day, as were some members of the press.  During a short noon intermission, the President of Grand Design RV, Don Clark, cut the ribbon and presented the keys to Camp-Land management for the 1000th Solitude 5th Wheel Camper manufactured at the new Grand Design plant in Middlebury, IN.

As the beautiful, sunshine-filled day came to a close, a number of visitors came to me to express their appreciation for the day’s hospitality and events.  That means a lot to me and especially to all the members of the Camp-Land team who spent many long hours planning and preparing for the Festival.  Thank you all for coming.

We at Camp-Land are very happy to join forces with Grand Design RV Co. and represent their 5th Wheel products in the Chicagoland-NW Indiana area.   Grand Design RV Co. was founded by a trio of sucessful and highly respected industry veterans, Don Clark and brothers Ron & Bill Fenech.   We are as excited about these products as any we have seen in Camp-Land’s 52-year history.
